Brooklyn, NY--Sophomore forward Derek McElligott scored in the 40th minute and senior netminder Brian Rowland repelled five shots on goal as UMBC (8-5-2, 5-1-1 NEC) defeated St. Francis (NY), 1-0, in a key Northeast Conference contest.
Off a long throw-in, defender Marcus Gross' header was shot by Mike Pennachia, and McElligott re-directed the attempt past the Terrier netminder at the 40:11 mark. The goal was McElligott's eighth of the season. St. Francis would press the attack in the final 45 minutes, but could not get one past Rowland, who notched his seventh shutout of the season and 21st of his career.
Seven of UMBC's eight wins this season have been by shutout. All seven league games have been decided by one goal or ended in a tie.
