UMBC MEN'S SOCCER PLAYS WILLIAM & MARY TO 1-1 TIE

William & Mary and UMBC battled on the soccer field for 120 minutes, with the result a 1-1 tie. UMBC held a 21-11 edge in shots during the match, but Tribe goalkeeper Billy Platz (Chesapeake, Va.) made eight saves in goal to help preserve the tie.

William & Mary (2-2-1) dominated the action for most of the first half, and struck for the first goal in the 26th minute off a corner kick. Alan Golden (Arlington, Va.) played the corner directly in front of the goal where Phillip Hucles (Virginia Beach, Va.), who had just come into the game, headed the ball past the Retriever goal keeper for his team-leading fourth goal of the season.

The contest did not see another score until the second half when UMBC (3-1-1) kept consistent pressure on the W&M defense. In the 56th minute a foul was called on the Tribe just outside the box and P.J. Wakefield blasted the resulting direct kick past the Tribe wall and into the goal to even the game. Platz and the rest of the William & Mary defense thwarted a number of other UMBC scoring chances in the remainder of the half, however, sending the match into overtime.

Neither team could mount sustained threats in the overtime and the match went into the books as a tie.
