WOMEN'S HOOPS DEFEATS AMERICAN, 76-69; CATALANOTTO GOES FOR 22

Baltimore, MD - - -Trailing 69-68, UMBC (2-3) held visiting American (5-3) scoreless over the final 2:07 and snapped a three-game losing streak, defeating the Eagles, 75-69, Tuesday evening at the RAC Arena. The second half featured five ties and seven lead changes until UMBC took the lead for good at 72-71 with 1:42 remaining on a jumper by senior forward Yinka Bada. Junior forward Millette Green converted a three-point play with fifty-six seconds remaining, making it 75-71, and junior guard Jessie Brown hit two free throws with eighteen seconds left for the final points of the contest. American took its largest lead of the game at 56-51 with 8:41 remaining as senior forward Hollie Steinman hit two free throws. However the Retrievers went on a 10-2 run to grab a 61-58 lead with 6:03 remaining. Bada scored five points during the run. The game went back-and-forth until the final minutes. UMBC led 35-26 with 3:55 remaining in the opening half, mostly due to a terrific display of shooting by freshman guard Christine Catalanotto, who scored 17 of her game-high 22 points in the first period. Catalanotto hit 6-of-9 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from three-point range in the half. The Eagles outscored UMBC, 12-4, and trailed by just one point, 39-38 at the break. Catalanotto finished 8-of-16 from the floor in 31 minutes of play. Bada added a season-high 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting, and also added 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Green matched her season-high with 11 points and added a team-high 8 rebounds. Steinman led the Eagles with 15 points and 9 rebounds. Guard Chanel Spriggs and forward Katryn Costenbader each added 13.
