WOMEN'S BASKETBALL EDGED BY NAVY

UMBC (4-4) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end, as they fell at Navy (5-3), 47-45, in Annapolis on Sunday. Navy's Maile Shimoda hit two free throws with 7.2 seconds remaining to break a 45-all tie. UMBC freshman forward Matea Pender went for the win, but her three-point effort was off the mark. UMBC jumped out to a 15-6 lead, but Navy went on a 9-0 run to tie the score and eventually took a 27-25 halftime lead. Neither team led by more than four points in the second half.UMBC rallied from a 45-41 deficit to tie on the score on field goals from Milette Green (2:10) and Sheila Johnson (32 seconds), but Retriever captain Jessie Brown fouled Shimoda on her drive to the basket in the final seconds. UMBC managed to shoot just 30.5% from the floor (18/59) and 4 of 19 from three point range. Pender recorded a "double-double" leading UMBC with 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Retrievers return to action on Thursday at Georgetown.
