WOMEN'S BASKETBALL COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AGAINST LOYOLA

Baltimore, MD - - -Loyola junior guard Shontrese Smith intercepted an errant pass thrown by UMBC freshman guard Christine Catalanotto with five seconds remaining, and then hit two free throws as the Greyhounds held on for a 55-51 victory, Tuesday evening at UMBC RAC Arena. After Catalanotto hit a three-point goal with twenty seconds remaining to bring the Retrievers within just one point, 52-51, Smith hit the front end of a one-and-one, which gave the Greyhounds a 53-51 lead with eleven seconds remaining. However, she missed the second free throw, setting up a final chance for the Retrievers to tie or take the lead in the closing seconds. Smith redeemed herself by anticipating Catalanotto's pass and was intentionally fouled by UMBC junior guard Jessie Brown. Loyola (3-1) led 29-25 at halftime and extended their lead to 12 points at 43-31 with 10:28 remaining in the contest. UMBC (1-2) climbed back into the game by going on a 14-6 run over the next six minutes and fourteen seconds. The run was started with consecutive three-point goals by Brown and senior forward Yinka Bada and was capped by another Bada field goal to make it 49-45 with 3:41 remaining. The Greyhounds extended their lead to six points on a lay-up by junior center Katie Netherton, but Brown connected on another trey with 1:02 remaining to bring UMBC within 51-48. Loyola, who has now defeated UMBC six straight times, held the Retrievers to just thirty-nine percent shooting and outscored the hosts by 11 points from the free throw line as UMBC was awarded just two free throws. Loyola senior guard Laura Slater scored a game-high 18 points and Smith added 12 points. Netherton chipped in with 10 points and 6 rebounds. Brown and Catalanotto each scored 11 points for UMBC and freshman forward Lara Seamon added 10 points and 7 rebounds in just 23 minutes off the bench.
