UMBC sophomore Shavar Staats (Ellicott City, Md./Milford Mill) is the UMBC Athlete of the Week after The America East Conference tabbed him as the Male Track Performer of the Week for his efforts in the Nittany Lion Challenge on January 14.  

In the 60 meter dash, Staats earned a second place finish, crossing the line in a time of 6.82. He bested his top freshman mark by .01 seconds and replaced himself with the fourth-best time in school history.

Staats improved by .08 seconds from the heats to the finals and moved from third to second place. He bested competitors from Pitt and Maryland to earn the silver.
