Nick Griffin

UMBC Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach Ryan Moran announced that Nick Griffin, UMBC ’21, has been promoted to assistant men’s lacrosse coach at his alma mater in July, 2023.  He serves as the Retrievers' offensive coordinator.

"The men's lacrosse program is excited and proud to see Nick receive this promotion,” said Moran at the time. “Nick has been a member of the program in all capacities, from being a student-athlete, to a three-time captain to a volunteer coach and now full time assistant coach. Nick’s passion and intelligence that he brings to this program will undoubtedly continue to have a positive impact on our student-athletes."

In his first season on the sidelines, in 2022, Griffin worked with the offense and then assisted the defense while heading the man-down defense in 2023. That unit was ranked fourth in the nation in goals-against average, and goalie Jayson Tingue was nominated for the Tewaaraton Award. He also coached America East First Team All-Conference selection close defenseman Ethan Robinson.

In 2024, he helped unlock the talents of Mike Doughty and Brian Tregoning, who were the conference leaders in points per game. Doughty recorded the most points per game since 2014 and produced the most assists per game under a first-year coordinator.

Griffin has been a member of the Retriever men’s lacrosse program since the fall of 2016. As a sophomore in the spring of 2018, the defenseman became the first UMBC men’s lacrosse NCAA Division I student-athlete to be tabbed to the Google Cloud Academic All-American team.

After earning First Team All-Conference honored in 2018, he suffered a foot injury prior to the 2019 campaign and did not compete, yet earned America East Elite 18 honors for having the highest GPA among participating student-athletes in UMBC’s victorious title game.

Griffin was named the team’s captain in 2019, 2020 and 2021. He missed his second consecutive season in 2020, but battled back and earned a starting role for the 2021 opener versus Mount St. Mary’s. However, he suffered another season-ending injury the following week in UMBC’s four-overtime victory over Stony Brook.

Among his many academic honors, UMBC’s mechanical engineering department named him their Griffin Outstanding Senior in the spring of 2021. He also was named to the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. He graduated with a degree in chemical engineering.

The Marriottsville, Md. native younger brother, Jacob, who played lacrosse at Flagler College. His parents, David and Christine, have also played a huge role in Griffin's career.
