    Assistant Coach
Kellen Arthur enters his first season as an assistant coach with the UMBC men’s lacrosse program in 2026-27. Head coach James Purpura added Arthur to his first Retriever coaching staff in August 2026.

Arthur arrives at UMBC after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at Mercer University. In his second season on staff in 2026, Arthur helped lead the Bears to six victories, the program’s most wins since 2020.

During his time at Mercer, Arthur coached the goalies, assisted with the defensive unit and managed the substitution box. He also contributed to opponent scouting, practice preparation, recruiting and the day-to-day operations of the program.

Prior to beginning his coaching career, Arthur was a four-year defensive midfielder at Mercer. He appeared in 53 games during his career with the Bears before transitioning into the coaching ranks at his alma mater.

A native of Cockeysville, Maryland, Arthur graduated from Calvert Hall College High School before attending Mercer.

Arthur also has a strong family connection to the Retriever program. His father, Alex Arthur, is a 1992 UMBC graduate and former member of the UMBC men’s lacrosse program.

At UMBC, Arthur will coach the Retrievers’ goalies and oversee the substitution box while assisting with the defense. He will also play a role in recruiting, scouting and player development.
