Adriana Mason joined #RetrieverNation as its new Assistant Athletics Director for Academics in June 2021 and was promoted to Associate Athletics Director in October 2022. She has dedicated her career to the field of academic services in a collegiate setting and has worked extensively with various intercollegiate sports.
Ms. Mason holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education, exercise and sports science from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill (1998) and a master’s degree in Education from Temple University (2000).
She began her career at Temple University where she started as an academic support specialist. Upon receiving her master’s degree, she also earned a promotion to an academic coordinator for student-athletes. She then moved onto the University of North Carolina, Charlotte as an academic advisor and tutor coordinator.
Loyola Maryland University offered the Baltimore native the opportunity to create an academic support program for student-athletes and she spent 12 years as the associate director. She worked with eight different teams, providing academic, eligibility, personal and career advising for student-athletes, aided in their course selection and served as a co-instructor for two freshman orientation courses. While at Loyola, Ms. Mason also oversaw the recruitment and training of all tutors, developed and maintained relationships with campus departments and served as webmaster for the departmental website.
Prior to coming to UMBC, Ms. Mason served as the senior associate director in the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes at LSU, working with the men’s basketball, beach volleyball, track & field and volleyball teams. Along with a colleague, she created and oversaw a graduate assistant development program.
She returned to UNC Charlotte and oversaw the daily operations of the Judy W. Rose Football Academic Center before joining the UMBC staff in June 2021.
