Dr. Davina Orieukwu

Dr. Davina Orieukwu enters her eighth season with UMBC in 2026-27 after joining the Retrievers in 2019 from Louisiana Tech University, where she served as throws coach from 2015-19.

Since arriving in Baltimore, Orieukwu has elevated the UMBC throws program to unprecedented national prominence, producing NCAA Championship qualifiers, All-Americans, conference champions, conference performers of the year, school and conference record holders, and NCAA Regional qualifiers. Since 2023, her athletes have captured multiple America East individual titles, produced NCAA Championship qualifiers and All-America honors, and earned both the 2026 America East Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Performer of the Year awards.

One of the most accomplished athletes in program history, Iosif Papa developed into a national-caliber competitor under Orieukwu’s guidance. Papa became both the UMBC and America East record holder in the discus with a throw of 59.86m (196’3”). He was a four-time NCAA East Regional qualifier and advanced to the NCAA Championships in 2025 and 2026, earning Honorable Mention All-America honors both seasons. Following his 2026 campaign, Papa was named the 2026 America East Outdoor Men’s Track and Field Performer of the Year. He captured three America East discus titles (2023, 2025, 2026) and finished his career as one of the most decorated throwers in conference history.

Orieukwu also coached Ava Roberts to one of the most dominant careers in UMBC history. Roberts set school records in both the shot put (16.74m/54 '11.25”) and discus (55.82m/183’ 1”), surpassing marks held by UMBC Hall of Famer, NCAA Champion, and four-time Olympian Cleopatra Borel. She earned Second Team All-America honors with an 11th-place finish at the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Championships and was named the 2026 America East Outdoor Women’s Track and Field Performer of the Year. Roberts won four America East titles, captured the 2024 Penn Relays shot put championship, and set the America East Outdoor Championship meet record in the shot put.

In the javelin, Gabriel Koletsi emerged as one of the top performers in program history, recording a mark of 69.24m (227’2”), the second-longest in school history. He was a two-time NCAA East Regional qualifier and the 2024 America East champion.

Toren Burr developed into a dual-event standout in the hammer and javelin, qualifying for the NCAA East Regionals in 2025 and 2026. He won the 2026 America East javelin title after finishing runner-up in 2025 and recorded a personal-best throw of 66.85m (219’ 3”).

On the women’s side, Marie Abongwa delivered a breakout career, setting school records in the hammer (55.20m/181’1”) and weight throw (18.35m/60’2”), winning both indoor and outdoor America East shot put titles, and earning America East Outdoor Championship Female Field Performer of the Meet honors.

Earlier in her tenure, Orieukwu coached Andrew Haberman to the 2021 America East hammer throw title and guided multiple podium finishes at the America East Indoor Championships, including runner-up performances in the shot put and weight throw.

Prior to UMBC, Orieukwu spent four seasons at Louisiana Tech University, where she developed Conference USA scorers, school record holders, and NCAA East Regional qualifiers across the throws. Her athletes consistently reached the conference podium and established multiple program records.

Among her most notable athletes were Malek Evans, a Conference USA Indoor silver medalist in the weight throw and school record holder (20.29m/66’ 7”); Liza Wall, a school record holder in the hammer throw (55.15m/180 ‘11”); and Jon Burrell, a Conference USA bronze medalist in the javelin. During her tenure, Louisiana Tech produced multiple conference scoring performances, NCAA East First Round qualifier with Tyler Griggers (63.91m/209’ 8”), and sustained top-tier conference finishes in the throws.

Orieukwu began her collegiate coaching career at Sam Houston State University, where she coached conference champions and NCAA West Regional qualifiers in the throws and combined events, including a Southland Conference pentathlon champion.

She holds USTFCCCA certifications in Strength and Conditioning, Throws, Jumps, and Technical Event Specialist instruction.

A former standout athlete at the University of Mississippi, Orieukwu was a multiple-time All-SEC performer, four-time NCAA First Round qualifier, and former school record holder in the shot put (16.84m/55’3”). She earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Ole Miss, a Master of Science in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University, a Master of Education in Adult and Higher Education from the University of Oklahoma, and a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Frostburg State University in 2025.
