Biography

2021-22:

  • UMBC’s top finisher (third overall) in the 200 freestyle at the Navy Invitational; also posted a fifth place finals effort in the 100 backstroke
  • Competed in three finals (200/500 freestyle, 100 backstroke) at the ECAC Winter Championships


2019-20: 

  • Smashed personal bests while finishing sixth and eighth respectively in the 200 and 100 yard backstroke events at the 2020 ECAC Championships
  • Competed in all of the sprint and 500 yard freestyle events at the America East Championships
  • Won the 200 freestyle for his first collegiate gold versus VMI
  • Took silver in the 500 free versus Howard

BACKGROUND:

·         Excelled at the 2019 YMCA Short Course Nationals, especially as a member of the 800 free relay quartet

·         Earned the Red Devils’ top award for a student-athlete as a senior in 2018-19

·         Competed for Somerset Valley YMCA and helped the club to a 2017 Long Course national title   

PERSONAL:

·         Son of Karlyn and Fred Welsh

·         Brother, Ross, earned four letters in swimming at UMBC (2015-19)

·         Considering a major in biological sciences and is interested in lab research  

·         An accomplished singer, who has performed the national anthem at YMCA Nationals
