Jay Greene, one of the most successful and popular players inUMBC basketball history, returned to his alma mater as anassistant men’s basketball coach in the fall of 2011 and willstart his fourth season on the sidelines in 2013-14.
Greene was inducted into the UMBC Athletic Hall of Fame in thewinter of 2014.
The Whitehall, Pa. native has played the mostbasketball games, 122, and most minutes, 4,192, in Retrieverbasketball history from 2005-09. The two-time team captain dishedout 683 assists, the most in school history, the third-most ever inAmerica East Conference history and the third-most of any NCAADivision I player in the state of Maryland.
He scored 1,186 career points and was the Reggie Lewis MostOutstanding Player in the 2008 America East Tournament, leading theRetrievers to their first NCAA bid. In his junior season, Greenewas the lone player in the nation to be ranked in the top five inthe nation in assist-to-turnover ratio (2nd, 3.47) and assists pergame (4th, 7.2 per game).
Greene, who was named UMBC’s Outstanding Senior Athletefor 2008-09, earned three league citations in four seasons ofcompetition. He was an All-Rookie team member in 2005-06, earnedFirst-Team All-Conference honors in 2007-08 and second team honorsin his senior campaign.
Greene earned his bachelor’s degree from UMBC in sociologyin the spring of 2009. He spent the 2010-11 season at director ofbasketball operations at Rider University.
