Biography

2013-14: Earned a bronze medal in the 200-yd.backstroke at the 2014 CCSA Championships in Knoxville, Tenn.… Recorded an NCAA “B” cut time of 1:45.66 inthe final race, the second-fastest time in school history, behindonly classmate Mohamed Hussein… Helped the UMBC 800 freerelay (6:30.37) team capture gold, while also breaking the schoolrecord at the conference meet… Also recorded a career-best200 IM time of 1:52.09 in the finals of the event to claim thetenth spot on the school’s all-time list… Competed inthe 100 back at the CCSA Championships, as well, setting aseason-best time of 50.40 in the finals… Won nine individualdual meet events during the year, including two each against Rider,Old Dominion, and East Carolina… Was named the CCSA Swimmerof the Week twice during the season.

2012-13: Won a silvermedal in the 200-yd. backstroke (1:46.80) at the America EastChampionships while placing fourth in both the 100 back (50.40) and200 IM (1:52.59) as the Retrievers reclaimed their conferencecrown… Set season-best times in each of the three eventfinals… Helped UMBC win the 800 free relay at the AmericaEast meet at Maine… Won four events during the dual meetseason as the Retrievers recorded just their second-ever undefeatedseason.

2011-12: Won the silver medalin the 200-yd. backstroke in a season-best time of 1:47.59 at theAmerica East Championships... Also placed fourth in the 100 back(50.39) and tenth in the 200 IM at the conference meet... Won the200 back and took home a silver in the 100 back at the PatriotInvitational... Won seven individual events, including the 200 backat Maryland, during the dual meet season, the third-highesttotal on the team... Swept the backstroke events twice during theRetrievers' dual-meet schedule.

2010-11: Won gold in the200-yard backstroke at the America East Championships... Claimedbronze in the 500-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke and asa part of the 400-yard medley relay team at the conference meet...Won the 200 back and placed third in four other events atthe Patriot Invitational... Named to the America EastAll-Conference Team... Named the America East Most OutstandingRookie at the conference meet... Named America East Male Swimmer ofthe Week for the week of Oct. 26 for winning the 100 and 200 backagainst Navy... Named to the America East Honor Roll.

Background: A five-time nationalchampion in the backstroke in Estonia… Claimed silver in the200-meter backstroke at the 2007 Junior Nordic SwimmingChampionships and finished fifth in the 100 back and sixth in the50 back… Represented Estonia in the 2010 EuropeanChampionships.

Personal: Son of Heigo and AnneRohtla… Has two younger siblings, Hanna and MarkusHugo… Majoring in biochemistry… Born June 24,1990.
