BALTIMORE -- The UMBC Men's Swimming & Diving began the new season in style by defeating both American and VMI in a double dual meet on Saturday at the UMBC Aquatic Complex.
The Retrievers beat American 231-66, and got past VMI, 187.50-112.50.
Braden Weise won three events as he took first in the 50 Free (20.47), 100 Free (45.76) and was on the winning 200 Medley relay team (1:33.14) with
Quinn Marchionini,
Matthew So and
Axel Mori that led off the meet.
Felipe Taveira Lira won the 200 Free in 1:42.28, and freshman
Turner Wiand took first in both the 100 Back (50.90) and 200 Back (1:53.83), with Marchionini (52.08) and
Nick Bracall (53.69 finished right behind Wiand in the 100.
The divers dominated, as
Kaleb Cave (287.95),
Grant Moore (277.90) and
Aidan O'Callaghan (255.75) went 1-2-3 in the 3 Meter, and Moore (279.05),
Anders Logas (268.25), Cave (260.70) and O'Callaghan (255.30) took the top four spots in the 1 Meter.
James Tao won the 200 Breaststroke in 2:10.03, and So won the 100 Fly in 50.26. Taveira Lira (1:54.60),
Tyler Kay (1:56.48) and Tao (1:58.53) then swept the podium in the 200 IM.
The Retrievers head to Navy next weekend to face the hosts and William & Mary at 11 a.m.
