Vestal, NY -- The UMBC Softball team defeated the UAlbany Great Danes 12-2 in five innings on Thursday afternoon. Haley Luginbill led the offense going 3-3 with seven RBI and two runs. She hit a grand slam in the fifth inning to end the game.
Luginbill set an America East record and school record with seven RBI in a single game. Her seven RBI broke the America East record of six RBI which was initially set back on 5/9/2003 by Jennifer Shields of Boston University vs. Maine.
The school record was also six RBI and originally was set on 3/12/95 with a handful of past players tying the record.
Amaya Carroll and Amya Lundy both went 2-3 with two RBI apiece. Jerzie Nutile scored two runs and had an RBI. Emily Riggs and Ella Squaires each had two runs scored for UMBC.
The Great Danes scored in the first inning with two runs. The Retrievers would answer back with a big second inning, scoring six runs to take a 7-2 lead. Kya Matter would not allow another run and struck out six batters in the victory.
The Retrievers will face #1 Binghamton on Friday at 11:00 a.m. to determine who goes to the championship game undefeated. It will be streamed on ESPN +.
