Women's Lacrosse Falls at UAlbany; Clinch America East Tournament Berth

Albany, N.Y. - Freshman attackman Emily Knapp scored four goals, but the UMBC women's lacrosse team dropped a 14-8 America East Conference decision against the UAlbany Great Danes on Saturday afternoon at John Fallon Field. The Retrievers clinched a conference tournament berth despite the defeat.

Knapp increased her team-leading total to 62 points (44 goals, 18 assists), while junior linemate Lauryn Warfield produced her second-straight hat trick with three goals. Junior attacker Libby Staples assisted on a game-high three goals, while junior defender Ella Killian (four ground balls, five draw controls) and freshman midfielder Tess Curtis (2 caused turnovers, assist) turned in impressive performances. Graduate student goalie Isabella Fontana made nine saves.

Knapp took a feed from Staples to even the game at 1-1 at the 12:20 mark of the first quarter, but UAlbany (6-9, 3-2 AE) went on a 7-1 burst to claim an 8-2 advantage with 10:56 left in the first half.

UMBC (11-3, 3-2 AE) scored three unanswered goals to end the first half scoring, trimming the deficit to 8-5 with 3:04 remaining in the second quarter. Senior attacker Grace Bruce opened the run, and then Knapp scored back-to-back even-up goals.

The Retrievers were still within striking range, 10-7 after Warfield scored off an assist by freshman attackman Annika Wray with 12:31 left in the third quarter. The Great Danes, however, scored four consecutive times, and the visitors could not recover.

UAlbany's Mikaela Mooney equaled Knapp with four goals and distributed a pair of assists. Gracie McCauley added three goals.

UMBC committed 17 turnovers and were outshot by a 33-23 margin.

The Dawgs will return to UMBC Stadium next Friday to take on Vermont for Senior Day.
