Women's Lacrosse Puts Undefeated Record on the Line Against Delaware on Wednesday Afternoon

  • The Retrievers improved to 6-0 for the first time in program history as the Dawgs pulled out a thrilling 11-9 win against the Temple Owls at Howarth Field on Saturday afternoon.
  • Senior midfielder Katana Nelson and freshman attacker Emily Knapp hit the back of the net three times to power the red-hot Retrievers. Nelson also contributed a team-high two caused turnovers, while Lauryn Warfield and Ella Killian won four draws each. Senior Avery Corino moved into UMBC's all-time Top-10 list in caused turnovers.
  • Graduate student goalie Isabella Fontana made seven saves and added a team-high three ground balls. She moved into 5th place all-time in program history in the latter category.
  • UMBC dominated much of the play, holding a 45-24 advantage in shots, including 29-16 in shots on goal.
  • Temple netminder Taylor Grollman kept the Owls in the game by making 18 saves.
  • The Retrievers scored seven of their goals on free-position opportunities.
DON"T KNAPP ON EMILY
  • UMBC freshman Emily Knapp has been named the America East Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week and the league's Rookie of the Week, it was announced on Monday afternoon.
  • Knapp, who has now won the Rookie of the Week thrice, takes home her first Offensive Player of the Week accolade.
  • Last week, the Abingdon, Maryland native helped lead the undefeated Retrievers to a pair of road wins at William & Mary and Temple. She produced the game-winning goal in both contests and combined for seven goals and five assists. 
  • The Maryvale Prep graduate is on a torrid scoring pace as she leads the circuit in goals per game (4.17), points (6.00), and is second in assists (1.83). In addition, she ranks 13th in ground balls (2.00) as well as caused turnovers (1.17).
  • Knapp has recorded at least three goals in all six contests.
ABOUT THE BLUE HENS
  • Delaney McDaniel leads Delaware with 20 points (11 goals, 9 assists) this season
  • Steph Marszal is allowing 11.43 goals per game in her four starts this season
  • Delaware is coming off a 14-6 victory over Wagner on Saturday.
  • Morgan Gore and Ella Rishko (10 goals this season) led the scoring charge, each netting four goals to pace the Blue Hens' offense. 
  • Saroney contributed two goals, while Rochon, Jaclyn Marszal, Lulu Rishko, and McDaniel each added one goal. 
  • Marszal dished out a team-high two assists, with Callie Drab, Gore, and McDaniel adding one assist apiece. 
  • Delaware dominated the shot count, 33-11, including a 29-10 edge in shots on goal.
  • Erin Gormley and Lena Stolarick earned CAA weekly honors on Monday. Gormely is the CAA Co-Defensive Player of the Week and Stolarick is the CAA Rookie of the Week after the Blue Hens nearly defeated thirteenth-ranked Princeton and beat Wagner on Senior Day.
  • Gormley tallied an all-around stat line over Delaware's games against #13 Princeton and Wagner. She averaged 5.0 draw controls, 3.5 ground balls, and 2.0 caused turnovers.
  • In the near upset of thirteenth-ranked Princeton, she corralled five draw controls, picked up four ground balls, and caused a pair of turnovers. In the win over the Seahawks, she posted a nearly identical line, just scooping up one more ground ball.
  • Stolarick posted career highs of four ground balls and three caused turnovers against the thirteenth-ranked Tigers.
