Women's Lacrosse Set to Host La Salle on Wednesday Afternoon

RETRIEVER BITES
  • UMBC freshman attacker Emily Knapp was named as the America East Conference Women's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week on Monday afternoon. She is the first Retriever to earn the award since Kolby Weedon during the 2022 campaign.
  • Knapp exploded for a combined 11 goals, four assists, six ground balls, and four caused turnovers in leading the Retrievers to a pair of run-away wins against Delaware State and Howard.
  • The Abingdon, Maryland native opened her career with five goals and an assist at Delaware State on February 11, and racked up six markers to go along with three helpers in the home opener versus Howard.
  •  Knapp leads the league in goals per game (5.5) and points per game (7.5)
  •  The UMBC women's lacrosse team throttled the visiting Howard Bison, 24-4, in the Retrievers' home opener on Saturday afternoon at UMBC Stadium.
  •  In addition to Knapp, senior midfielder Katana Nelson found the back of the net five times, equaling her career high. Senior Grace Bruce and sophomore Emma O'Callaghan added hat tricks. It was the first career goals for O'Callaghan.
  •  UMBC held a whopping 45-8 advantage in shots and forced 19 turnovers.
  •  Lizzie Bateman also distributed three assists and has a league-high seven on the season.
  •  Libby Staples led the squad with five ground balls and senior Ria Lagdameo led the defense with a career-high four caused turnovers. Staples is tied for the league-lead with 3.50 ground balls per game.
  •  Graduate student Isabella Fontana made two saves to pick up the victory in goal.
  • Lauryn Warfield is averaging a league-high 7.0 draws per game.
 
ABOUT THE EXPLORERS
  • The Explorers opened the season with a 15-4 win at Delaware State and dropped their home opener against Lafayette, 10-9.
  • La Salle fell to FDU by a score of 12-11 on Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia. The Explorers came within one goal of completing a comeback in which they were down by as many as eight goals, however it could not score in the final four minutes.
  • Senior Katie Johnson scored four goals against FDU and puts her at 10 goals on the season. It was her seventh straight game with at least two goals. Johnson led the team in 2024 in the following categories: goals (35), assists (8), points (43), and shots (73).
  • Emi Waldron, a Sacred Heart transfer, has scored seven goals and a pair of assists.
  • Mary Babbage is allowing 10.2 goals per game and has a .467 save percentage
  • Alana Lathan and Ellen Stickney, who were fourth and fifth in goals and points last season, return for the new campaign. Stickney's seven assists were the second most on the team.
  • The team is looking to improve off of last season, when the team finished 3-11 in 2024.
LAST MEETING
  • UMBC scored four straight goals in the second quarter to break open a 5-5 deadlock and went on to defeat the La Salle Explorers,14-7, Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium in Philaderlphiia.
  •  Grace Bruce scored a game-high five goals for the second straight contest Attacker Kolby Weedon (7 draw controls) added her fourth hat trick of the season and handed out two assists while midfielder Katana Nelson contributed a pair of markers. Isabella Fontana made four stops in goal to pick up her fourth win
