Matter and Carroll Shine for Softball on Opening Day

Greenville, N.C. -- Amaya Carroll and Kya Matter each had multi-hit games and drove in a run as the UMBC Softball team opened the 2025 season with a pair of losses at the East Carolina Tournament on Friday.

The Retrievers fell 9-2 to No.22 Boston U., before dropping a tight 4-2 decision to Radford.

Carroll went 2-for-3 with a run scored, two stolen bases and an RBI in the opener. Jolie Torrens also had an RBI single in the contest. Ella Squaires had a single and a stolen base as well.

In game two, Radford took advantage of a UMBC error to go up-20 early and the Dawgs could not complete the comeback.

Matter went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and an RBI single, while having a solid start in the circle as she allowed just two earned runs, struck out four and walked none in six innings of work. Emily Riggs had an RBI double, while Squaires and Haley Luginbill also had hits for UMBC. Phoebe Florian, who scored a run in game one, also scored in game two, while Torrens scored as a pinch-runner on Matter's RBI single.

The Retrievers have a 9 am rematch with Radford on Saturday, followed by a 3 p.m. matchup with ECU.
