Meet Standout Women's Swimmer Elze Bielskute

Athletic Communications intern Liam Anderson recently sat down with standout women's swimmer Elze Bielskute.

What led you to transfer to UMBC, and how has the transition been for you?
I'm here because the swim team at my previous school got cut because of the budget. I had to transfer, and I ended up here. The transition was really hard because the two schools were really different. Yeah, but I adapted pretty fast.

You recently set a school record in the 100 IM—can you take us through that race and what it meant to you?
I knew that race was probably the last 100 IM I'd ever swim, which really motivated me. But honestly, I don't remember a single second of it—it was just a blur.

As a senior, how have you embraced a leadership role within the team?
I didn't immediately step into a leadership role since I arrived at UMBC only in my junior year. At first, I felt more like a freshman, following rather than leading. But this year, I've been able to help many of the newcomers and build strong relationships with my teammates.

What's been the most significant adjustment you've had to make since coming to UMBC?
One of the biggest adjustments has been the team's cultural dynamic. My previous school had many international students on the swim team, whereas UMBC had fewer. Some might say UMBC has a lot, but there is a noticeable difference between them and my old team. I've had to adapt to experiencing more of the American culture.

Looking back on your collegiate career, what moment stands out as particularly special to you?
Winning the conference title in the 200 free relay last year and qualifying for NICs was definitely the highlight of my career.

What's your favorite event to compete in, and why?
The 100 breaststroke. It's my main event, and I always have the most fun racing it.

How do you balance the demands of being a student-athlete, especially with your interest in microbiology and biochemistry?
It's difficult, but time management is key. I stick to a structured schedule, making sure to set specific times for practice, studying, and resting. It's really important to keep those times separate and not overlap.

Who has been the biggest influence on your swimming career, and what's the best piece of advice they've given you?
My mom has been my biggest influence. She introduced me to swimming and made me fall in love with the sport.

What's something about competitive swimming that you think most people don't realize?
The psychological aspect of it. Like any other sport, the physical side is huge, but people often underestimate how much it is mental.

Last question.. Why UMBC?
The academic programs were a big factor. When researching schools, I saw that UMBC had strong ratings for my major. I also had a great conversation with the head coach before committing, which helped solidify my decision.
