Softball Completes Sweep with Run-Rule Win at Maine

Orono, Maine -- The UMBC Softball team completed its three-game sweep of host Maine with an 8-0 run-rule victory in five innings on Sunday.

Ella Squaires and Amaya Carroll each drove in a pair of runs, while Kya Matter pitched five scoreless innings and drove in and scored a run herself.

Carroll and Haley Luginbill each had two-hit games, and Matter and Ashley Della Guardia each walked twice as well. Jolie Torrens went 1-for-1 with two walks and two runs scored.

How it Happened:
  • Carroll tripled with one out in the top of the first and scored on an Amya Lundy two-out single
  • In the top of the second, Matter walked with one out, and Lyndsey Evix and Torrens followed with singles to load the bases
  • Squaires then walked in a run and Carroll brought home two with a double to make it 4-0
  • Emily Riggs hit a leadoff single in the third and moved to second on a Della Guardia walk
  • Macy Granzow came in to pinch run for Riggs and promptly scored on a Matter single
  • Squaires would later drive in Della Guardia on a two-out single to make it 6-0
  • Luginbill began the fourth with a single, and her pinch runner Julia Colton stole second, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch
  • Luginbill would eventually drive in the final run of the game in the top of the fifth with an RBI single to score Torrens
The Retrievers return home for the final time this season when they host UAlbany for Senior Weekend beginning next Saturday
