BALTIMORE – The UMBC women's lacrosse team dominated from the opening whistle and cruised past Manhattan, 17-6, in damp, chilly conditions at UMBC Stadium.
The Retrievers completed the non-conference portion of the schedule at 5-3, while the Jaspers' three-game winning streak was halted and they fell to 3-3.
A bevy of Retrievers recorded outstanding performances, including:
- Junior attacker Grace Bruce, who led all goal scorers with four and added an assist
- Senior linemate Mary Ellis, who dished out a career high five assists
- Sophomore midfielder Lauryn Warfield dominated the draw control, as UMBC won 19 of 24. She earned six DC's and added two goals
- Red-shirt junior attacker Kolby Weedon amassed eight draw controls, two goals and one assist
- Sophomore defender Ella Killian recorded five draw controls and a team-best three ground balls
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UMBC scored twice in a span of 15 seconds in the first 3:12 of the game and outscored Manhattan, 4-0, in the first 15 minutes. Bruce tallied two of the four goals.
- The Retrievers added two early second quarter scores as junior attacker Alexis Abe and Weedon tallied 37 seconds apart to put the hosts ahead, 6-0 just 74 seconds into the period.
- The Jaspers answered with three consecutive goals to trimmed the lead in half (6-3) at the 8:24 mark of the second.
- But UMBC would score the next nine goals, six to end the first half and three to open the second. Ellis earned assists on the first and final two goals of that run, while junior midfielder Ria Lagdameo tallied back-to-back scores in the midst of the 16-minute surge.
- The Retrievers led, 12-3 at halftime and 15-4 after 45 minutes.
NOTES
- Junior midfielder Katana Nelson also posted a hat-trick for UMBC, her third of the season.
- Abe posted three points (2-1-3) as UMBC had seven players with multiple-point games.
- UMBC outshot MC, 33-17, and senior goalkeepers Isabella Fontana (3ga, 4 svs., 44 mins.) and Mikaela Staranko (3ga, 3 svs., 16 mins.) combined for seven stops.
- Manhattan's Olivia Cruthers led the Jaspers with three goals.
- UMBC improved to 5-0 versus Manhattan.
UMBC opens America East Conference play at Bryant on Saturday, March 16 with an 11:00 a.m. contest.
