Riggs Walk-Off Homer in Ninth Completes Series Sweep of Maine

BALTIMORE -- Emily Riggs hit a one-out two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to give the UMBC Softball team a 4-2 win over visiting Maine on Sunday to complete the three-game sweep.

UMBC improved to 14-9 (3-0 AE) and moved its winning streak to seven.

Kya Matter struck out 14, walked two, allowed just four hits and one earned run in nine innings of work to pick up her fourth victory of the week.

Riggs went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a walk in the win.

How it Happened:
  • The game was scoreless until Maine got an unearned run in the top of the fifth.
  • The Black Bears had the bases loaded with no outs after scoring the run, but Matter got an out at the plate and then two strikeouts to end the threat
  • The Retrievers answered in the bottom of half of the inning with a pair of runs, however
  • Macy Granzow was hit by a pitch with one, and then stole second
  • Ella Squaires walked and Amaya Carroll followed with an RBI single to tie the game
  • Riggs then gave UMBC the lead with an RBI double
  • Maine tied it up in the top of the sixth on a solo homer, and it would remain tied all the way until the ninth
  • In the bottom of the ninth Carroll blasted a long single off the wall in left, and then Riggs sent the very. next pitch over the fence in center to win the game
Amya Lundy, Ashley Della Guardia and Squaires all had hits for the Retrievers, with Squaires adding a pair of walks.

UMBC will travel to Binghamton for a three game series beginning on Friday afternoon.
