Wilmington, N.C. --
Maggie Frisvold,
Kya Matter and
Jerzie Nutile allowed just two runs, one earned, in 15.2 innings of work as the UMBC Softball team split a pair of games on the second day of the UNCW Tournament.
The Retrievers held on for a 2-1 win over high-powered Kent State in the first game, before dropping a 1-0 heart-breaker in the ninth inning to George Mason in the night cap.
Kent State came into the contest averaging 7.4 runs per game, but Frisvold kept them off the board for four innings to pick up her first career victory. Matter entered in the fifth and shut the Golden Flashes down until two outs in the top of the seventh when they doubled in a run. Matter got a fly out to end the game and pick up the save.
Erin Behel, who had a hit in each game, broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning of game 1 when she ripped a two-out single to score
Ashley Della Guardia from second.
UMBC would an important insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when
Amya Lundy hit a leadoff single, went first to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on an error.
In game two,
Jerzie Nutile shined in the circle, pitching all 8.2 innings, with the winning run being the free runner who scored on a two-out single to win the game. Nutile allowed just five hits and struck out four.Â
Ella Squaires and
Emily Riggs joined Behel and Lundy with hits in the contest.
The Retrievers will face Providence tomorrow at 12:40 before ending the weekend against host UNCW at 5:15. Each game will have a two-hour dead drop time limit.
