Caroline Sargent and Dani Nicusan Selected to CSCAA Academic All-America Squad

Each Retriever earned the honor for the second consecutive season.

RICHMOND - The College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) announced that UMBC's Caroline Sargent (Trumbull, Conn.) and Daniel Nicusan (Santana de Mures, Romania) each earned 2022-23 Second Team Scholar All-American honors.

Both Sargent and Nicusan earned their second consecutive CSCAA Second Team honor.

Sargent finished her college career in grand style by cruising to a victory in the 200 backstroke at the 2023 America East Championships and setting a league record in the process. She was selected to the league's All-Academic team for three consecutive campaigns and captured the Most Outstanding Swimmer honor of the 2022 America East Championships.

Nicusan competed in four events at the CSCAA National Invitational and placed third in the 100 IM with a PR and school record time of 48.72. He won three individual golds at the 2023 America East Championships (200 IM, 100 and 200 breaststroke).

The rising senior was selected to 2023 College Sports Communicators Swimming & Diving All-District Academic Team and has earned spots on the America East All-Academic Team in the past two seasons.

The CSCAA recognized a total of 2,290 (1,270 women and 1,020 men) swimmers and divers for their efforts in the pool and in the classroom.

"Congratulations to these exceptional student-athletes who have demonstrated outstanding achievements both in the classroom and in their sport," said Executive Director, Samantha Barany.  "The CSCAA takes pride in recognizing individuals who excel in academics while competing at the highest level."

To be named to the First-Team Scholar All-America, student-athletes must achieve a minimum GPA of 3.50 and participate in their respective national championship. Second-Team selections also earned a GPA of 3.50 or higher and met the "B" time standard for the national championship or participated in a diving zone qualification meet. All criteria can be found on the CSCAA website.

"Earning a 3.5 GPA or higher is a remarkable accomplishment requiring dedication, discipline, and a commitment to academic excellence. Furthermore, competing at the national level is a testament to their talent, dedication, and perseverance in the water.  These student-athletes have set themselves apart from their peers by excelling in both areas, showing their exceptional abilities and drive for excellence," said Barany.

Founded in 1922, the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), is the nation's first organization of college coaches. The mission of the CSCAA is to advance the sport of swimming and diving with coaches at the epicenter of leadership, advocacy, and professional development.
