Box Score BALTIMORE – The visiting Vermont Catamounts scored the final six goals of the game to edge the UMBC women's lacrosse team, 12-10, on Saturday afternoon at UMBC Stadium.
UMBC (7-6, 1-4 America East), who honored six seniors prior to the contest on Senior Day, got two goals each by seniors
Shannon Finch,
Lauren Cremen, and
Claire Bockstie as well as sophomore
Kolby Weedon.
Bockstie, who scored two goals and added two helpers, moved into a tie for second place on UMBC's all-time goals list with 152 tallies. In addition, junior defender
Kennedy Evans became UMBC's all-time single-season leader after causing a game-high four turnovers and now has 30 on the season.
The Retrievers dominated the first quarter as they grabbed a 7-1 advantage after the first fifteen minutes. The Catamounts opened the scoring just forty-nine seconds in on a marker by Jane Trauger but the Retrievers responded with seven straight tallies.
Finch scored the first two goals for the Retrievers to give the hosts their first lead at 2-1. The opening goal was set-up by Bockstie at 13:29 and she added a free position goal with 10:34 remaining.
Weedon scored after another assist by Bockstie and then Bockstie gave UMBC a 4-1 advantage after an unassisted tally at the 7:49 mark. Junior
Dymin Gerow scored the Retrievers fifth goal and Cremen put in two in a row to finish the quarter.
UMBC led 8-3 at halftime as the visitors outscored the Retrievers by a slight, 2-1 edge in the second period. Bockstie recorded her second tally of the day for UMBC's goal.
Vermont trimmed the deficit to 8-5 with 13:29 left in the third quarter on a pair of goals by midfielder Ava Vasile, however, senior midfielder
Megan Halczuk and Weedon answered with back-to-back goals to restore a 10-5 advantage with 10:07 left in the third quarter. McKenzie Ballard cut the deficit to 10-6 with 5:07 left in the third.
The visitors, who improved to 7-7 (3-2 AE) went on to score all six goals in the final quarter to complete the come-from-behind win.
Ciera Licare tied the game at 10-10 with 7:10 left in the contest and Vasile scored the go-ahead marker with 6:10 left on a free position shot.
Vasile finished with a game-high five goals for Vermont.
UMBC will complete their regular-season next Saturday at New Hampshire. The Retrievers can still earn the No. 4 seed in the upcoming AE Tournament with a win at New Hampshire (have to win by 3 or more goals) and a victory by UAlbany over Bryant.
