Men's Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season At Weems Baskin Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The UMBC men's track and field program will attempt to hit the ground running this weekend as it heads to the University of South Carolina for the outdoor opener; the Weems Baskin Invitational.

Day 1:

Nicolas Alphonse set a pair of personal-records as well as qualifying in both the 60m hurdles (8.35 – 3rd) and 500m (1:05.30 – 6th).
Ibrahim Khairat scored two points by coming in seventh for his 6.78m long jump, the only field participant to score for the Retriever men.
Three different student-athletes made the finals for the 200m as Jaeden Burke (21.80 - PR), Seun Olajide (21.96 – PR), and Shamar Barnes (21.99) crossed the line in fourth, sixth, and seventh respectively.
Shavar Staats logged a fifth-place finish in the 60m dash preliminaries at 6.95 seconds while Marquis Miller grabbed the final spot by snatching the eighth position in a 49.39-second 400m run.

Day 2:

Both relay teams got a chance to shine on the podium as the 4x800 squad of Tyler Dregely, Lamine Fofana, Zachary Taylor, and Daron Taylor earned second with a time of 7:43.20, while the 4x400 quartet of Burke, Michael Arnold, Miller, and Jayo Adegboyo ran a 3:15.67 en route to third place.
Burke (21.92 in 200m), Zachary Taylor (2:30.33 in 1,000m), and Miller (49.05 in 40m) all had individual successes to go along with their relay victories, each earning top-five finishes in their respective events.
Khairat won the silver medal for his high jump of 14.61m to go along with Staats' runner-up status in the 60m with a speed of 6.83.
Alphonse combined to put nine points on the scoreboard for the Dawgs as he was among the top-five in the 60m hurdles (8.62) plus the 500m (1:05.33).
Others who produced scores were Donovan Young's personal-record triple jump (14.23m, fourth), Olajide's 200m (22.00, fifth), and Barnes' 200m dash (22.09, sixth).

Last Time at the Weems Baskin Invitational (2022):

Day 1:

Mack McKeever was victorious in the steeplechase with a time of 9:43.20, Daron Taylor came three spots behind in fourth at 10:08.45 and Zachary Taylor finished one place after his twin at fifth for his 10:08.45 mark.
Burke secured fourth in the 400m at 49.92 and Miller ranked eighth during the same event (50.31).
Barnes (10.91, 4th) logged a top-five placement on top of Taheer Pierce (11.08, 10th) registering a top-ten finish for the 100m dash.
The 4x800m quartet that included Dregely, Lamine Fofana, and Mulisa Reggasa took home the bronze with a 7:54.71.
As far as the field events went, Toren Burr was the top placer on day one in fourth place for his 59.56m javelin toss, Alexander Ianniello ended the pole vault in eighth at a height of 3.83m, and Khairat registered tenth in the long jump (6.91).

Day 2:

Cameron Hindle grabbed the gold medal for his 3:56.14 time in the 1,500m to top the Retrievers on the second day.
Dregely secured fourth place for his 800m run of 1:57.76, Staats had the same placement in the 100m dash (10.50), and Khairat came in the fourth allotment as well but in the field event of the triple jump (14.71m).
