BALTIMORE – The UMBC women's and men's swimming and diving squads head to East Meadow, N.Y. to compete in the 2022 ECAC Winter Championships. The competition gets underway at the prestigious Nassau County Aquatics Center on Friday, Dec. 2 and continue through the weekend.

The men will be looking to defend their 2021 title, while the women secured a second place finish as UMBC competed in the championships for the first time in many years.

The women will face stiff completion from defending champion Columbia, Siena, Monmouth and former America East foe Stony Brook.

SILVERS GALORE IN 21: The women capped the first day of ECAC competition by setting a meet record in the 400 medley relay.
The quartet of graduate student Caroline Sargent, Jenna Gwinn, senior Sierra Tosten and junior Makaela Hill smashed the previous mark by over seven seconds, completing the race in 3:44.13 and earned the first golds of the meet for the Retrievers.

The aforementioned foursome set a meet record in the 200 medley relay and lowered the seven-year old mark by over a second with a time of 1:41.86.

Hill placed second in the 50 freestyle with a mark of 23.35, leading a bevy of silver-earning Retrievers. Tosten and Sargent each record second-place finishes.

Tosten earned silver in the 100 butterfly (55.04), while Sargent was edged in the 100 backstroke (55.82).

Sargent earned another silver, as she was just edged in the final stretch of the 200 backstroke. Her time of 1:58.23 was .6 seconds behind the winner and the second-fastest recorded at the championships.

Senior Alexis Bruington had an excellent effort on the 3-meter diving board, amassing 211.70 points for a second-place finish.

LATELY: The UMBC women's swimming and diving team captured 15 of 16 events in a meet versus America East Conference foe VMI on Nov. 12 in the Retrievers' first home meet of the 2022-23 season.

Senior Claire Custance and juniors Roaa Farag and Makaela Hill each won a pair of events for the Retrievers. Custance triumphed in both breaststroke events, Farag captured the 200 butterfly and 500 freestyle, while Hill cruised to wins in both sprint freestyle events.

HAPPY NEW YEAR: The team does not return to competition until we turn the page on 2022. UMBC travels to Washington, D.C. to take on Howard on Jan. 14.
