Women's Lacrosse Falls on the Road, 10-7, to Temple

PHILADELPHIA - The UMBC women's lacrosse team fell on the road to the Temple Owls, 10-7, on Saturday afternoon. The game was tied, 5-5, at the half but the Owls used a dominate second half to secure the victory.

Temple moves to 5-3 on the season, extending its winning streak to four, while UMBC falls to 2-3.

 

STRAIGHT FACTS

UMBC opened the game with two goals, the first coming from junior Olivia Docal (Glenwood, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) just 1:10 into the first half. Freshman Claire Bockstie (Forest Hill, Md./Maryvale Preparatory) added the second at the 26:19 mark. Both goals were assisted by junior Lily Kennedy (Marriotsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge).

 

The Owls tied the game up with 20:55 to play before Docal scored her second of the day off a free position shot. Temple again tied the game up at 3-3 with 12:40 to go in the first half.

 

UMBC took a 5-3 lead late in the period after freshman Megan Halczuk (Fawn Grove, Pa.) scored on a man-up opportunity and Kennedy added her first goal of the day.

 

Temple scored two goals at the end of the period, including one with two seconds remaining to send the teams into halftime with a 5-5 score.

 

The Owls opened the second half with two goals to take a 7-5 lead with 24:33 to play before the Retrievers got on the board with a score from Kennedy to cut the lead to 7-6 with 19:20 on the clock.

 

Temple added another goal before Halczuk added her second of the day to make the score 8-7, but the Owls scored the final two of the game for the 10-7 final.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

16 - Roberts tied her career-high in saves with 16; she now has 53 on the season.

 

5 - Kennedy led the day with five points off two goals and three assists; the Retrievers took five free position shots on the day, while the Owls had zero.

 

3 - Halczuk and junior Courtney Renehan (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg/Maryland) each had three draw controls on the day, accounting for six of UMBC's seven.

 

ON TO THE NEXT ONE

The Retrievers will return back to Philadelphia on Wednesday, March 11 when they face the Drexel Dragons. The opening draw is scheduled for 4 p.m.
