BALTIMORE – Two dozen members of the UMBC swimming and diving teams will participate at the 2020 ECAC Championships. This year's championships will take place at LeJeune Hall on the campus of the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland from February 28 - March 1.

Last Time Out: 2020 America East Championships - The Retriever men's team won its third consecutive America East Swimming and Diving Championship in Worcester, Mass., capping a brilliant weekend on Sunday, Feb. 16. UMBC has won 12 of the 13 championships sponsored by the America East since 2004.
Niklas Weigelt of UMBC earned the Most Outstanding Rookie award, while his teammate and junior Kai Wisner was named the men's Most Outstanding Swimmer. Wisner captured the 400 individual medley, and the 500 and 1650 freestyle events.
Senior Illia Rattsev earned the Coaches' Awarded for accruing the most points over the course of the meet. Rattsev became the first swimmer in America East history to sweep the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events in three consecutive years of competition.
Rattsev and junior Natalija Marin received the Elite 18 Awards. Rattsev has a 3.97 GPA in bioinformatics and computational biology while Marin holds a 3.87 GPA in mechanical engineering.
The women placed second in the championships as New Hampshire wrested the title from the Retrievers. Junior Vanessa Esposito captured gold for UMBC in the 1650 freestyle, while sophomore Caroline Sargent earned a pair of silvers in the backstroke events.
UMBC Highlights from 2019 ECAC's:
- Rattsev earned first-place finishes in the 100 and 200 freestyle events.
- Wisner finished third in the 1650 freestyle in a time of 15:33.23.
- Sophomore Matt Bennici (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) placed second in the 200 fly, a time of 1:48.40, followed by junior Jack Carlisle (Cape Town, South Africa) in third with a time of 1:49.24.
- Marin came in third in the 200 butterfly, touching in with a time of 2:00.26. In the women's 200 free, she earned a bronze medal, touching in with a time of 1:50.89.
