Women's Lacrosse Wins Midweek Battle Against Bucknell, 13-9

BALTIMORE - The UMBC women's lacrosse team used a strong first half, including a four-goal run in the middle of the period, to help pick up a 13-9 midweek win over the Bucknell Bison on Wednesday evening.

UMBC moves to 2-2 on the season while Bucknell falls to 2-3.

STRAIGHT FACTS

The Retrievers got off to a hot start as freshman Rachel Montgomery (West Friendship, Md./Glenelg) scored just 26 seconds into the game off a feed from classmate Claire Bockstie (Forest Hill, Md./Maryvale Preparatory).

Freshman Megan Halczuk (Fawn Grove, Pa.) helped put the Retrievers up, 2-0, two minutes into gameplay before Bucknell scored their first goal at the 26:21 mark.

Junior Olivia Docal (Glenwood, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) her first of three goals in the half to give UMBC a 3-1 lead before the Bison cut the lead to 3-2 with 17:23 to play. From there, UMBC went on a 4-0 run, with two from Docal and two from junior Lily Kennedy (Marriotsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) to take a 7-2 lead at the 8:42 mark.

The teams each scored two more goals, with two for the Retrievers coming from Shannon Finch (Woodbine, Md./South Carroll) and Zoë Pekins (Columbia, Md./Hammond) to help give UMBC a 9-4 lead heading into halftime.

The Retrievers continued to add to their lead as Halczuk and junior Courtney Renehan (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg/Maryland) put UMBC up, 11-4, with 25:42 to play before Bucknell scored two straight to cut the lead down to 11-6. 

After Renehan scored her second of the game, Bucknell went on a three-goal spurt to cut the lead down to 12-9 with just 4:17 left to play.

Bockstie would give the Retrievers the final goal of the game at the 1:56 mark and help seal the win for UMBC.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

17 - The Retrievers held a 17-7 advantage in draw controls over the Bison, including an 8-2 edge in the second half.

11 - Lexi Roberts (Baldwin, Md./Fallston/Army West Point) made 11 saves in the win; she has made 37 saves so far this season. 

3 - Docal (3g), Kennedy and Renehan (2g,1a) all led the team with three points. 

ONTO THE NEXT ONE

The Retrievers will head out on the road for four games, starting with the first of two contests in Philadelphia as they take on the Temple Owls on Saturday, March 7 at 1 p.m.
