Women's Lacrosse Falls to #18 Johns Hopkins, 17-7, on Tuesday Night

BALTIMORE - The UMBC women's lacrosse team fell in a crosstown battle to #18 Johns Hopkins, 17-7, on Tuesday night.

 

STRAIGHT FACTS

The opening half remained scoreless for almost 12 minutes before Hopkins scored back-to-back goals in less than a minute of each other.

 

After the Blue Jays added another goal to take a 3-0 lead, Lauren McDonald (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) halted the scoring run with her first goal of the game with 15:15 left to play in the first half.

 

After Hopkins added another goal, Olivia Docal (Glenwood, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) cut it to a two-goal game off a free position shot.

 

The Blue Jays rattled off four goals to take an 8-2 lead into halftime.

 

33 seconds into the second half, Grayson Corbett (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) found the back of the net to cut into Hopkins' lead, 8-3.

 

The Blue Jays scored twice before Lily Kennedy (Marriotsville, Md./Marriots Ridge) scored off a pass from Payton Van Kirk.

 

Johns Hopkins added four more scores to the board to take a 14-4 lead, but the Retrievers used goals from Corbett, Docal, and McDonald to fight back and chip away for a 14-7 Hopkins lead.

 

The Blue Jays scored three goals over the final ten minutes for the 17-7 final.

The Blue Jays move to 7-2 on the season, while the Retrievers fall to 2-7.

 

BY THE NUMBERS

129 - With her two goals on the net, McDonald now has 129 career goals and is tied for seventh place in program history. She needs one goal to take over sole possession and four goals to take over sixth place (132, Jackie Abendschoen).

 

15 -  Carly Tolino (Middletown, Md./Middletown) marked her third straight game with 15 saves, her fourth consecutive with 10+. The goalie made back-to-back saves early in the first half to keep Johns Hopkins out of the net.

 

4 - McDonald led the team with four points off two goals and two assists, her first two of the season.

 

UP NEXT

UMBC will travel to Bucknell on Thursday, March 21 for a 4:30 p.m. makeup contest with the Bison. The previous contest scheduled for March 6 was postponed.
