Women's Lacrosse Falls to Drexel, 10-6, on Saturday Afternoon

BALTIMORE - The UMBC women's lacrosse team fell in non-conference action to the Drexel Dragons, 10-6, on Saturday afternoon.

STRAIGHT FACTS

Lauren McDonald (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) opened the game with a goal early in the first half before Drexel took a 3-1 lead.

 

Payton Van Kirk (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) closed the first half the way it started by giving the Retrievers another goal off a pass from Rachel Ridgley (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin).

 

Julia Hatmaker (Woodbine, Md./Century) tied the game up at 3-3 early in the second half after scoring on a free position shot.

 

The Dragons used a three-goal run to take a 6-3 lead before McDonald netted her second of the game off an assist from Ridgley and Van Kirk scored off a free position shot to cut the score to 6-5.

 

After Drexel got a goal back, Zoë Pekins (Columbia, Md./Hammond) put UMBC back within one, 7-6, as she scored with 8:39 remaining in the second half.

 

The Dragons finished the game out with three straight goals for the 10-6 final. McDonald and Pekins each had free position attempts late in the game, but both shots were saved by the Drexel goalkeeper.

Drexel moves to 4-4 on the season as UMBC falls to 2-6.

BY THE NUMBERS

128 - With her two goals today, McDonald now has 128 career goals and owns sole possession of eighth place in program history. 

 

26 - UMBC picked up a season-high 26 ground balls in the game, with Carly Tolino (Middletown, Md./Middletown) leading the team with seven.

 

20 - Each team cleared the ball 20 times, with UMBC clearing 20 of 23 times (.869).

 

15 - Tolino made 15 saves in between the pipes for the Retrievers, marking her second straight game with 10+ saves.

 

2 - McDonald (2g), Van Kirk (2g), and Ridgley (2a) all led the team with two points on the day.
