Late Goal Propels Mount St. Mary's over Women's Lacrosse, 9-8

BALTIMORE - After a tie game with 1:52 remaining in the second half, the UMBC women's lacrosse team fell to the visiting Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers, 9-8, on a late goal on Thursday afternoon. 

STRAIGHT FACTS

-UMBC opened the game on a 3-1 run, with scores from Lily Kennedy, Zoë Pekins, and Lauren McDonald.

-Mount St. Mary's rattled off three straight goals to take a 4-3 lead with 9:31 remaining in the first half.

-Kennedy and McDonald would score two more times before the end of the half to give the Retrievers a 5-4 lead going into halftime.

-Out of the break, Payton Van Kirk put the Retrievers up 6-4 off an assist from Kelsey Weishaar. However, the Mountaineers rattled off four straight goals to take the 8-6 lead with 7:40 remaining.

-On a woman-up opportunity, Van Kirk and Weishaar connected again to help cut the deficit to 8-7 before Grayson Corbett tied the game up at 8-8 with 1:52 left to play.

-The Mountaineers controlled the ensuing draw and took a 9-8 lead with 39.9 seconds left in the game.

The Mount moves to 2-0 on the season while the Retrievers fall to 2-1.

BY THE NUMBERS

11 - In goal, senior Carly Tolino made 11 saves; this is her third game with 10+ saves.

3 - Van Kirk and Kennedy led the team with three points off two goals and an assist on the day.

2 - McDonald notched two goals on the day; Defender Kayla Renehan and Jenna Baverman each caused two turnovers and scooped up two ground balls; Weishaar recorded two assists, both on goals by Van Kirk.

UMBC will stay at home as they host #2 Maryland on Wednesday, Feb. 27. The opening draw is set for 5 p.m.
