Track and Field Finishes Strong Showing at Bucknell Team Invitationals

Lewisburg, Pa. – The UMBC track and field team recorded numerous top three finishes on Saturday while competing in the Bucknell Team Invitationals.

For the men, Andrew Daniels ran the 110m hurdles in 14.53 to win the event, and record the eighth fastest time in UMBC history, while John Oputa took third with a time of 14.76.  Daniels also won the 400m hurdles with a time of 53.82 and Jamal Cody took fourth with a time of 54.57.  Brian Nelson also took home first by running the 100m in 10.77.  Also in the 100m, John Oputa took fifth with a time of 11.21.  In the 200m dash, James Oakley took home fourth with a time of 22.22. 

UMBC took home five of the top eight finishes in the 3,000m, including Matt Bennett taking second with a time of 8:49.06, and Elijah Hawkins taking third with a time of 8:50.91.  Matt Kingeter took fifth finishing in 8:53.47, Brian Cave took sixth finishing in 8:59.22, and Bradley Arbaugh took eighth crossing the line in 9:04.25.  With these times, Bennett moved into seventh, Hawkins eighth, and Kingeter ninth in UMBC history.

In the 4x400m relay, Nelson, Oakley, Cody, and Oputa took second with a time of 3:13.85, while the 4x100m team of Donald Duncan, Noel Njem, Nelson and Oputa took third with a time of 41.82.

In the field for the men, Russell Bowman won the shot put throwing a distance of 52-2.75, while Andrew Haberman threw the tenth best distance in the hammer throw with 49.80m, which was also good for third in the event, while Bowman took sixth with a throw of 46.77m.  Bryce Bruce took sixth in the discus throw, throwing 42.28m.

Overall, the men's team finished third out of seven teams in the meet.

For the women, Kara Patrice finished first in the 100m, crossing the line in 12.44.  Patrice also came in sixth in the 200m dash with a time of 25.53.  Patrice also helped the 4x100m relay team earn first place, which also included Funmi Daramola, Amani Wallace, and Erin Patrice.

In the 400m, Tori Johnson took home third with a time of 57.23, while Wallace took sixth with a time of 58.40.  Kelsey Ponton took fourth in the 3,000m, finishing in 10:25.14, while Courtney Mattson took seventh with a time of 10:40.97.

Briana Roberts took eighth in the 1,500m with a time of 4:44.45.

In the field, Ricca Graham finished third in the hammer throw with a throw of 41.89m.  In the high jump, Zoya Trendafilova took eighth after clearing a height of 1.55m.  Kelechi Nwanaga took ninth in the shot put with a distance of 11.21m. 

Also in action in the Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton, Kaya Knake ran the 800m elite in 2:11.07 to take 13th in the event.  Also, Taylor Baranoski ran the 1,500m elite in 3:57.75, while Miles Smith ran the 800m elite in 1:55.77.

The Retrievers travel to Philadelphia next weekend to take part in the Penn Relays, beginning on Thursday.
