Prodanas Wins Hammer Throw, Qualifies for NCAA Prelims in Opening Day of Pepsi Florida Relays

Gainesville, Fla. – Sophomore Alexios Prodanas took home first place today when threw a near-personal best distance of 64.76m in the hammer throw event.  Along with the victory, Prodanas also qualified for the NCAA prelims.

Along with Prodanas, senior Tony White recorded a distance of 60.17m in the javelin throw, which placed him in second all-time at UMBC.  White's second throw was a distance of 63.67m, which was good for eighth place in the event.

Other Retrievers in action today were juniors Kelsey Ponton and Matthew Kane, both of which were competing in the 5,000m run.  Ponton took 28th with a time of 17:58.31, while Kane took 34th with a time of 15:27.93.

UMBC returns to action for day two in Gainesville tomorrow afternoon, with the first event of the day beginning at 12 p.m.
