Boston, Mass. – The UMBC track and field completed the second and final day of the America East Indoor Championships on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Kaya Knake took fourth place in the 800m run with a time of 2:10.97, setting a school record with her time.
Along with Knake, classmate Tori Johnson led the team on the day. Johnson took the bronze in the 500m dash with a time of 1:15.98, and helped the 4x400m relay team of herself, juniors Amani Wallace and Yinka Alabi, and senior Funmi Daramola earn the silver medal, crossing the line in 3:48.37.
Darmola also earned a sixth-place finish in the 200m dash with a time of 24.79 and a fifth-place finish in the 400m dash with a personal best time of 56.58. Wallace took sixth in the same event with a personal best time of 56.77, and freshman Collese Daley took eighth with a time of 58.39.
Knake, along with classmates Briana Roberts and Bridgett Redding, and freshman Ariella Garcia took sixth place in the 4x800m relay, finishing in 9:25.18. Redding also placed eighth in the 1,000m run with a time of 2:59.41. This time is the seventh fastest in school history.
On the men's side, seniors Jamal Cody and John Oputa continued their strong weekend. Cody took the silver in the 60m hurdles, finishing in 8.03 for the third best time in school history, and took sixth with a time of 48.96 in the 400m dash. Oputa had a top five finish in the 200m dash, finishing in 22.15, and a seventh-place finish in the 400m dash with a time of 49.13.
Cody and Oputa, along with classmate Noel Njem and freshman Erik Jenks finished in fourth in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:19.45.
Fellow senior Ifa Eado earned fourth in the mile run, with his season best time of 4:09.64, while sophomore Miles Smith finished in seventh in the 800m run with a time of 1:53.63. Junior Matthew Kane took ninth in the 3,000m run with a time of 8:29.45.
In the field, Russell Bowman took fourth after the senior recorded a distance of 15.98m.
The men took seventh place in the event, while the women took eighth place.
Parts of the team will be traveling back to Boston next weekend to partake in the 2018 ECAC/IC4A Indoor Track and Field Championships.
