Track and Field Returns to State College for Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup

Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC track and field team will make the trip back to Penn State this weekend to partake in the Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup on Friday and Saturday.  UMBC had a strong showing last weekend in both State College and Fairfax.

Last Time Out (Penn State National):

On day one, the men were led by junior Jamal Cody who placed third in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.13.  The distance medley team of Ifa Eado, John Oputa, Miles Smith, and Taylor Baranoski crossed the line fourth with a time of 10:07.18.

Junior Kelsey Ponton placed 11th in the 5,000m run to lead the women on day one, crossing the line in 18:00.46.

On day two, Baranoski led the men, earning the silver in the mile run with a time of 4:14.92 for his personal record in the event.  Eado ran a time of 4:10.42 to take sixth in the mile run invite.  Oputa took fourth place with a time of 49.67 in the 400m dash, while James Oakley placed seventh in the 200m dash, running a time of 21.96.

The women were led on day two, sophomore Kayla Knake led the charge, taking home the gold in the 800m with a time of 2:11.53, her second-best performance all-time in this event.   Classmate Bridgett Redding ran the 1,000m in 3:01.91 to finish seventh.

Funmi Daramola, Tori Johnson, Collese Daley, and Yinki Alabi took sixth in the 4x400 relay, crossing the line in 3:53.50.  Junior Amani Wallace took tenth in the 200m dash with a time of 25.68.

Last Time Out (Patriot Games):

Senior Zoya Trendafilova cleared a height of 1.55m in the high jump to earn silver and lead the way at George Mason.  Classmate Ricca Graham finished fourth in the weight toss, throwing a distance of 13.27m, while sophomore Elisabeth Kan took sixth place in the triple jump with a distance of 9.42m.

Senior Ceclia Davies took a top five finish in the 500m dash, crossing the line in 1:24.39.

Sophomore Michael Parkent led the men in Fairfax, earning bronze in the weight toss with a distance of 15.24m.  Freshman Donald Duncan took fifth in the 60m with a time of 7.14.

Next Up:

The Retrievers will compete in the Fastrack National Invitational in Staten Island next weekend on Friday, Feb. 9.
