UMBC Track and Field Kicks Off 2018 Indoor Season at Bucknell Tri-Meet on Saturday

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC track and field will kick off the 2018 indoor season at the Bucknell Tri-Meet on Saturday in Lewisburg, Pa. The Retrievers are coming off strong indoor seasons a year ago, that saw the men finish in fourth place and the women in seventh at the America East Championships.

Quick Hits on Last Indoor Season:

-The UMBC men finished the indoor season in fourth place at the America East Championships, as Albany once again claimed the league crown. UMBC had several athletes compete at the IC4A Championships, led by junior Jamal Cody who shattered the school record in the 400m dash at the AE Championships.

-Cody broke the school record with a time of 48.05. The 4x400m relay team of Cody, Erick Soetje, James Oakley III and Darrius Oxley set a new school mark with a  time of 3:14.88 taking gold in the event. Soetje would set a school record of his own just a week later in the 500m at the IC4A Championships, earning silver in the event. Soetje would be honored on the America East All-Academic Team as well.

-The women finished in seventh place in the conference, led by Sophia Cologer who earned top ten finishes in a pair of distance events. She would go on to break the school record in the mile at the ECAC Championships with a time of 4:51.70.

-The 4x400m relay team of Mercedes Tillman, Tori Johnson, Amani Wallace and Funmi Daramola earned gold at the America East Championships with a time of 3:46.28 .

Last Year at the Tri-Meet:

-Several Retrievers earned first place finishes on the day, earning qualifying marks for ECAC/IC4A competition as well.

-The women were led by Erin and Kara Patrice who went one-two in the 60m dash with times of 7.85 and 7.88 respectively. Kayla Knake earned a first place finish in the 600m run, clocking in at 1:36.67. Madeleine Entwistle ran the second fastest time in school history in the 60m hurdles in 8.81, not only a personal best, but good to qualify for ECAC competition.

-In the field, Elisabeth Kan won the triple jump, going a distance of 10.60m.

-The men saw Brian Nelson kick off the meet with a fist place finish in the 60m dash, crossing the tape in a time of 7.07. Urgy Eado followed suit, crossing the finish line in first in the mile run with a time of 4:23.70. Sophomore Jamal Cody was just nipped at the line to finish second in the 60m hurdles, hitting an IC4A qualifying time of 8.24.

-In the field, Jacob Netschke won the high jump, clearing 1.99m (6'6.25"). Not to be outdone was Alexios Prodanas who also qualified for IC4A's with a first place finish in the weight throw. Prodanas had his best toss of 17.19m (56'4.75"), ahead of teammate Michael Parkent (14.43m, 47'4.25").

On Deck:

-The Retrievers will return to the track next Saturday, Jan. 13 at the Great Dane Classic. The meet will be hosted by Albany at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
