Women's Lacrosse Outlasts American, 10-8

WASHINGTON, D.C.- In a game of back-and-forth scoring, the UMBC women's lacrosse team picked up a mid-week win over the American Eagles, 10-8, on Wednesday, Feb. 22.

After American took an 8-6 lead with 16:13 remaining in the game, UMBC used a four-goal run to hold on for its second-straight win and 13th consecutive win over the Eagles. Sophomore Lauren McDonald (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) scored twice during the run, along with senior Sam Nolan (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and sophomore Brittany Levine (Middeltown, Md./Middletown), who netted the final goal of the game.

The first half started out fast for the Eagles as they scored the first three goals of the games. The Retrievers closed the gap after scoring two of their own off a goal from sophomore Sara Moeller (Phoenix, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) and senior Jennie Milligan (Crofton, Md./South River) off a feeder from Nolan.

After American scored another goal to make the score 4-2, UMBC would tie things up before going into the intermission. Junior Carolyn Jamison (Westminster, Md./Westminster) scored with 5:25 remaining on the clock after sophomore Kayla Renehan (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) forced a turnover to close the gap to 4-3 before scoring again at the 3:14 mark after she knocked a ball away and picked up a groundball.

American started the second half with a hot hand, scoring twice in the matter of a minute to lead, 6-4. UMBC would again equalize the game at 6-6 after Nolan scored back-to-back goals. 

Nolan finished the day with a hat trick while adding two assists for five points; Nolan also led the team in draw controls with six. McDonald and Jamison each scored two goals, while Moeller notched two assists in the game. Junior Sarah Turco (Phoenix, Md./Mercy) led the team with five caused turnovers, while classmate Caitlin Miller (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) led with five ground balls.

In goal, senior Ashley Peacock (Crofton, Md./Elizabeth Seton/Louisville) played all 60 minutes in the net, making eight saves on 16 shots faced. 

Overall, the Retrievers outshot the Eagles, 33-22, and held a 14-6 advantage in draw controls. UMBC also picked up 24 ground balls compared to American's 17.

UP NEXT: UMBC will close out its three-game road stretch when they travel to George Washington on Saturday, Feb. 25. The Retrievers and the Colonials will begin at 1 p.m. from Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.
