FAIRFAX, Va. – The UMBC swimming and diving teams completed day two of the Patriot Invitational with a solid day of competition, including numerous individual wins. The men sit in fifth place with 360 points and the women are seventh with 217 points heading into the final day.
In the 200 medley relay, the men took home gold after the team of Alexander Gliese, Luis Galvan, Philip Adejumo, and Ilia Rattsev touched in with a time of 1:31.03. The Retrievers also had a top ten finish as Garrett Wlochowski, Kyle Paxton, Jack Carlisle, and Connor Ganley finished ninth in a time of 1:34.19.
Adejumo earned a first place finish in the 100 fly, touching in with a time of 48.94, and first in the B finals in the 100 back with a time of 51.31. Gliese earned silver in the 100 back after he touched in with a time of 49.92, while Rattsev finished sixth in the 200 free with a time of 1:41.17.
Senior Nikola Trajkovic (Zrenjanin, Serbia) finished third in the B finals of the 400 IM, touching in with a time of 4:04.06, while Paxton (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) earned a fourth place finish in the B finals of the 100 breast with a time of 57.02.
The men also picked up two top ten finishes in the 800 free relay, as Gliese, Trajkovic, Adejumo, and Rattsev earned bronze with a time of 6:49.11. Ross Welsh, Ganley, Wlochowski, and Haythem Abdelkhalek finished tenth, touching in with a time of 6:58.24.
On the boards, junior Leo Buoye (Spencerport, N.Y.) finished fifth in the 3 meter dive with a score of 230.15, while classmate Elijah Wright (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) finished in sixth with a score of 223.80.
On the women's side, the Retrievers saw strong showings in both individual and relay events. Freshman Natalija Marin (Belgrade, Serbia) finished third in the 100 fly after she touched the wall in 56.12; she also finished fourth in the B finals of the 200 free with a time of 1:53.76. In the 200 free, junior Hania Moro (New Cairo, Egypt) earned bronze as she finished with a time of 1:52.00.
Junior Maddy Popalis (East Petersburg, Pa.) finished second in the B finals in the 100 breast, touching in with a time of 1:06.38. Sophomore Emily Vance (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) finished first in the B finals in the 100 back with a time of 57.79.
The women also picked up a pair of top ten relay finishes, as the team of Moro, Natalie Davis, Britt Driscoll, and Marin finished fifth in a time of 7:37.63. In the 200 medley relay, Vance, Popalis, Marin, and Cassandra Willie finished sixth in a time of 1:46.49.
The Retrievers will wrap up competition at the Patriot Invitational tomorrow, November 18 with preliminaries starting at 10 a.m. and finals beginning at 6 p.m.
