Omar, Rentzsch Lead Retrievers on Day One of America East Championships

Results

Burlington, Vt.—Seniors Hassan Omar and Vincent Rentzsch earned gold on Saturday during day one of the America East Championships. Omar won his third career 10,000m run, while Rentzsch once again led the pack in the javelin.

Omar finished the 10k in a time of 33:18.94, five seconds ahead of second place. Austin Hayslett and Matt Kingeter placed fourth and eighth to earn points for UMBC with times of 33:27.20 and 33:34.28 respectively.

Rentzsch took gold in the javelin with a throw of 68.31m (224'1"), 10m ahead of second place. Freshman Christian Kallenberg earned fourth with a toss of 57.07m (187'3"). Kallenberg is currently in second place in the decathlon with 3,337 points, just 58 points behind first.

Rhys Burgett and Patrick Duboyce earned points in the 3,000m steeplechase, finishing in second (9:16.66) and seventh (9:33.48) respectively. Urgy Eado qualified for the finals of the 1,500m run, taking sixth in a time of 4:12.65.

In the hurdles, Jamal Cody, and Purcell Freeman qualified for finals of the 110m hurdles, while Cody, Darrius Oxley, and Samuel Enomanna earned spots in the 400m hurdle finals. Other finals qualifiers include Daryian Miles (100m and 200m dashes), James Oakley III (200m dash), John Oputa (200m dash), and Afees Abolurin (100m dash). Erick Soetje finished fifth in the 400m dash prelims with a time of 48.33.

In the distance events, Nick Johnson earned a spot in the 800m run finals, finishing ninth in 1:54.92.

Justin Glaze and Thomas Johnson placed six-seven in the long jump with jumps of 6.61m and 6.58m each.

The women earned points from Abigale Slonski and Samantha Steinman in the javelin. Slonski took second with a toss of 42.07m, while Steinman finished right behind her with a throw of 40.22m. Ozi and Nneoma Edokobi earned points in the hammer throw, placing fourth and seventh. Ozi had a throw of 49.66m, while Nneoma had a throw of 49.51m.

Sophia Cologer and Chelsea Vane finished fourth and seventh in the 3,000m steeplechase with times of 10:46.43 and 11:13.42 respectively.

Madeleine Entwistle and Jean Udo earned spots in the 100m hurdle finals with a fifth (14.46) and ninth (14.64) place finish in the prelims. Essence Fredericks took second in the prelims of the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:00.50. Yinka Alabi and Entwistle also earned spots in the finals.

Other Retrievers who earned spots in the finals include Mercedes Tillman (100m dash), Erin Patrice (100m dash, 400m dash), Amani Wallace (200m dash), Funmi Daramola (400m dash) and Angelina Oputa (800m run).

Day two of the America East Championships will begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday, May 8 in Burlington.
