A Slew of Retrievers Earn Gold at the Mason Spring Invitational

Fairfax, Va.—UMBC track and field had a strong showing at the Mason Spring Invitational on Saturday, including a handful of individual and relay gold. Several other Retrievers earned top five finishes on Saturday, as the teams ramp up competition toward conference championships.

The women were paced by freshman Erin Patrice who earned gold in the 100m dash. Patrice won the prelims with a time of 12.35, before taking the finals in a time of 12.19. Her twin sister Erin earned third in a time of 12.24. Essence Fredericks won gold in the 400m hurdles, taking the race in a time of 1:02.86, hitting an ECAC mark in the process.

The quartet of Mercedes Tillman, Nailah Johnson, Funmi Daramola, and Frederickstook first in the 4x400m relay in a time of 3:57.42, just ahead of the team from Dartmouth who finished in 3:57.62.

In the field, Nneoma Edokobi and Ozi Edokobi went four-five in the shot put with tosses of 12.62m and 12.55m respectively. Abigale Slonski, Jean Udo and Valerie Johnson earned fifth place finshes in the javelin, triple jump and long jump. Slonski had a toss of 36.81m, while Udo and Johnson had jumps of 10.95m and 5.39m each.

On the men's side, Erick Soetje earned gold in the 400m dash, crossing the finish line in 49.66. Patrick Duboyce earned a top ten finish, placing fifth in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9:53.16. James Oakley III and Daryian Miles went two-three in the 200m dash with times of 22.25 and 22.41 respectively.

Miles and Jamal Cody earned spots in their respective finals. Miles finished the prelims of the 100m dash in fourth place, before earning a fourth place finish in the finals in a time of 11.12. Cody took sixth in the 110m hurdles prelims, taking the same spot in the finals with a time of 15.05.

Soetje, Cody, John Oputa, and Darrius Oxley took second in the 4x400m relay, finishing with a time of 3:27.15.

In the field, Justin Glaze, Musangu Bukasa, Ishaq Rana and Christian Kallenberg earned fourth place finises in the long jump (6.24m), triple jump (12.47m), discus (45.03m) and the javelin throw (53.49m).

The Retrievers will have some time off before heading to the Morgan State Legacy Meet and Larry Ellis Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, April 22-23.
