Box Score BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – It took a few extra minutes, but UMBC women's lacrosse came away with their second America East conference victory, an 11-10 win against Binghamton in overtime. Junior attacker Sam Nolan (Fallston, Md./Fallston) scored the game winner and added two more goals and four assists in her third seven-point game this season.
UMBC improves to 8-6 overall, and 2-2 in the America East with the win. Binghamton falls to 4-10 overall, and 0-3 in-conference on the year.
The Retrievers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes, and junior goalkeeper Ashley Peacock (Crofton, Md./Elizabeth Seton/Louisville) and the defense were able to keep the Bearcats off the board until a BU attacker grabbed the rebound and got a shot passed Peacock while she was recovering from the initial shot.
The Bearcats scored twice more before UMBC was able to respond, and the home team kept one step ahead of their guests throughout the rest of the half.
Goals from freshmen Payton Van Kirk (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) and Brittany Levine (Middletown, Md./Middletown), and sophomores Laura Osborne (Chesapeake Beach, Md./Huntingtown) and Carolyn Jamison (Westminster, Md./Westminster) helped the Retrievers get a 10-8 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation.
A Bearcats free-position goal helped them get within one goal of UMBC, and the combination of long offensive possessions and a huge save by Peacock on a BU fast-break looked like it might be enough to give the visitors the win. But with 10 second left, the Bearcats were able to convert on a free-position attempt and force overtime.
The Retrievers controlled possession throughout the entirety of the first three-minute overtime period, but the BU defense was determined to keep UMBC scoring.
The second overtime period started with a draw control by sophomore midfielder Marissa Davey (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge), and the Retrievers continued their domination of possession. UMBC was strong on the draw control all afternoon and won 18 draws to Binghamton's six.
Just thirty seconds would be all the Retrievers needed, as Nolan received the ball behind the goal and finessed her way to the front of the net for a point-blank shot that beat the keeper and ended the game.
The Retrievers close out the regular season with two Saturday home games. Next week Vermont comes to town for a noon game on April 23. The following week, UMBC hosts the University of New Hampshire for an 11 a.m. matchup on April 30, to finish the regular season.
