Box Score BALTIMORE – Despite one of their most complete games of the season, the women's lacrosse team was unable to keep pace with local rival Johns Hopkins in UMBC's last non-conference game of the season, losing by a score of 17-12. The Retrievers fall to 7-6, while the Blue Jays improve to 9-6. The loss marks the first time this season UMBC scored 10 or more goals and did not come away with a win.
UMBC scored eight goals on 10 shots in the first half, and were able to trade goals with their hosts after falling in, and climbing out of an early 2-0 hole.
Junior attacker Sam Nolan (Fallston, Md./Fallston) scored back-to-back goals in similar fashion to tie and then give the Retrievers their first lead after 20 minutes of play. Her second goal pushed her past the 30-goal mark for the first time in her career.
Jamison was forced to fight through lock-off defense just to get open for a pass, but was able to score twice in the first half. UMBC's leading scorer netted two in the second half as well.
Despite being outshot, 20-10, in the first half, the Retrievers headed into the break with a one-goal lead that would not have been if not for a clutch save by junior goalkeeper Ashley Peacock (Crofton, Md./Elizabeth Seton/Louisville), one of five in the first half.
After falling behind early in the second on account of two quick goals from Hopkins, senior midfielder Paulina Christ (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) forced a turnover in the defensive end that the Retrievers were able to turn into a long possession. Jamison finally found the net on that possession, and freshman attacker Lauren McDonald (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) scored her second goal of the game off a feed from Nolan.
The Blue Jays countered with a five-goal run that put the lead out of reach for UMBC. Freshman attacker Payton Van Kirk (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) did her best to help narrow the lead by powering in and scoring her 10th of the season, but Hopkins scored three more times to ensure their ninth win of the season.
The Retrievers take to the road for the last time this season with a trip to Binghamton University this Saturday, April 16. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
