Peacock, Defense Hold Dragons Scoreless Through Second; Women's Lacrosse Wins 9-7

Box Score

PHILDAELPHIA - The Retrievers scored just three goals in the second half, but it was all UMBC needed to edge out Drexel University and secure a 9-7 victory in Philadelphia. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Peacock (Crofton, Md./Elizabeth Seton/Louisville) made six saves and helped the Retriever defense hold the Dragons scoreless through the second half. With the victory, UMBC improves to 4-2, and Drexel falls to 5-2.

Sophomore attacker Carolyn Jamison (Westminster, Md./Westminster) put up four goals for the Retrievers, including the tying tally 7:43 into the second half. Jamison now has three or more goals in the last five games, and has scored multiple goals in every game this season.

Drexel took a 6-2 lead over the first 15 minutes of the contest before the Retrievers tied it at six a piece with just under two minutes left in the first half. The Dragons struck once more before heading to the locker room to give the home team a 7-6 lead, but it would be their final tally of the evening.

UMBC made the most of two free-position attempts over the last 10:30 of the game to take the lead and grab the insurance goal.

Drexel took four free-position shots in the second half, but failed to convert any of them. The Dragons saw their attempts saved, blocked, go wide and carom off the pipe. It was a total reversal from the first half that saw Drexel score on three of their four attempts.

Sophomore Marissa Davey (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) and junior attacker Caroline Haggerty (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School) each notched two goals in the victory, and junior attacker Sam Nolan (Fallston, Md./Fallston) scored once.

Up next, the Retrievers head back to Philadelphia to take on La Salle University this Saturday. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
