Box Score BALTIMORE – Women's lacrosse dropped their first home game of the season with a 19-9 loss to Temple University at UMBC Stadium. The Retrievers were hampered by difficulty on the draw and committed 37 fouls, their second highest total of the season.
Temple's veteran attack proved too much for the Retrievers' defense, and despite good ball movement on offense, the home team could not find the openings to get the ball on net.
UMBC looked to be keeping pace with Temple through the first ten minutes of the game, despite falling behind 4-1.
Temple senior attacker Brenda McDermott quickly smothered comeback hopes for the home team by going on a five-goal tear over the next seven minutes of play.
Sophomore attacker Carolyn Jamison (Westminster, Md./Westminster) put a stop to Temple's run with a successful free-position shot, but the Owls responded 30 seconds later.
The Retrievers tried their best to put themselves into position to overcome the hump with three goals in the final 4:40 of the first half, but Temple outscored their hosts 10-4 in the second half and headed back to Philly with their fifth straight victory.
Jamison and classmate Marissa Davey (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) each put up three goals in the loss, and freshman middie Payton Van Kirk scored twice.
Junior attacker Sam Nolan (Fallston, Md./Fallston) was held to just a single goal and two shots in the contest, a season low for the number two points getter on the team.
Junior goalkeeper Ashley Peacock (Crofton, Md./Elizabeth Seton/Louisville) made eight saves throughout the 60 minutes of game time.
The Retrievers hit the road for just their second game away from UMBC Stadium this season when they head to Drexel University this Wednesday, March 9. First whistle is set for 4 p.m.
