BALTIMORE – UMBC held the visiting George Washington Colonials to just three goals and three different Retrievers completed hat tricks to give the home team their third straight victory at UMBC Stadium. The Retrievers downed the Colonials 13-3, and improve to 3-1 on the season.
Junior goalkeeper Ashley Peacock (Crofton, Md./Elizabeth Seton/Louisville) tied her season high in saves, making 11 stops on 14 shots on goal. Peacock has quickly made an impact since transferring to UMBC from Louisville over the offseason. She is averaging 7.71 goals against and is saving 55 percent of shots faced.
The Colonials played the Retrievers tough in the first half, and kept the home team to four goals for the first 28 minutes of play. UMBC doubled their lead with four quick scores before the end of the half to head into the break with an 8-0 advantage.
Peacock's seven first half saves enabled the attacker to build a lead the Colonial would not be able to contest with in the second. The Retrievers scored three more unanswered tallies to start the second, and did not let in a goal until the midway mark of the half.
UMBC played the matchups to their advantage, scoring 11 of their goals unassisted.
Sophomore attacker Carolyn Jamison and juniors Sam Nolan (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Caroline Haggerty (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School) each scored three goals in the Retrievers' victory. Jamison has scored multiple goals in every game so far this season, racking up a team-high 13, and this was her third consecutive game with three or more goals.
Nolan has also goals in every game this season, as well as having scored three or more in the past three contests. The veteran attacker leads the Retrievers in assists (6).
Local product Lauren McDonald (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) fought her way into the starting lineup for the second time this season, and made the most of the opportunity by putting in two goals.
Junior attacker Jennie Milligan (Crofton, Md./South River) and sophomore midfielder Caitlin Miller (Fredrick, Md./Tuscarora) each chipped in a goal in the win.
Miller was dominant on the draw with six wins to herself. The Colonials struggled to adjust at the dot and ended the game with only five draw controls. The Retrievers finished with 13.
The women's lacrosse team completes their four-game home stand with a noon matchup against Temple University next Saturday, March 5, at UMBC Stadium.
