Men Finish Third, Women Fourth at America East Championships

Staten Island, N.Y.—UMBC track and field finished the America East Championships on Saturday, with the men taking third, and the women in fourth. Several Retrievers turned in top times, and others earning conference gold. Hassan Omar was named Most Outstanding Track Performer, as well as earning the Co-Coaches Award.

The women were led by Nneoma and Ozi Edokobi, who finished one-two in the shot put. Nneoma took gold with a toss of 14.78m, while her sister Ozi had a toss of 13.62m.

On the track, Yinka Alabi earned bronze in the 200m dash finals with a time of 25.01. Essence Fredericks took second in the 500m dash, crossing the tape in 1:15.82.

The 4x400m relay team of Mercedes Tillman, Essence Fredericks, Funmi Daramola and Nailah Johnson took silver in a time of 3:52.64.

On the men's side, Hassan Omar finished with another gold medal, this time in the 3,000m run with a time of 8:28.56. Freshman Jamal Cody shocked the field in the 60m hurdles, winning the event with a time of 8.14.

A pair of Retrievers earned gold medals in the field events, with Thomas Johnson and Isahq Rana winning the triple jump and shot put. Johnson won the triple jump with a jump of 14.46m, while Rana was a winner with a toss of 16.70m.

The women finished fourth behind repeat champion Albany, New Hampshire and Binghamton. Stony Brook, Vermont, UMass Lowell, Maine and Hartford rounded out the field. For the men, Albany repeated as champions, followed by Binghamton and UMBC. Vermont, New Hampshire, Stony Brook, UMass Lowell, Maine and Hartford rounded out the nine team field.

UMBC will return to the track at the ECAC/IC4A Championships in Boston on March 5-6.
