UMBC Track and Field Completes Day One of America East Championships

Day One Results

Staten Island, N.Y.—UMBC track and field took to the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex, looking to win the America East Championship. Senior Hassan Omar repeated as 5,000m run champion on Friday.

Omar crossed the tape in a time of 14:33.97, which is also an IC4A qualifying time in the event.

Other top men's finishers include Daryian Miles, who qualified for the 60m dash finals, finishing the prelims in fourth place with a time of 6.91. The senior followed that up with a qualifying time in the 200m dash with a time of 22.11. John Oputa earned a spot in the finals of the 400m dash, finishing eighth in a time of 49.85.

Erick Soetje and Jamal Cody will compete in the 500m dash and 60m hurdle finals tomorrow with time of 1:04.49 and 8.42 respectively.

In the field, Justin Glaze earned a fourth place finish in the long jump, with his best jump of 6.79m. Isahq Rana earned a fourth place finish in the weighted throw with a toss of 16.23m. After four events of the heptathlon, rookie Christian Kallenberg sits in first place with a score of 2,860.

For the women, Mercedes Tillman earned a spot in the finals of both the 60m and 200m dashes with times of 7.71 and 25.10 respectively. Yinka Alabi and Amani Wallace also earned spots in the finals of the 200m dash with times of 25.35 and 25.36.

Tillman would not be finished, as she then earned a spot in the 400m dash finals with a time of 57.69, qualifying alongside Funmi Daramola in a time of 58.14.

Essence Fredericks qualified for the 500m dash in a time of 1:16.22, while Madeleine Entwistle took sixth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.92 to move on to the finals.

In the field, Nneoma and Ozi Edokobi finished four-five in the weighted throw with tosses of 16.72m and 16.18m respectively. Both throws were qualifying marks for ECAC competition. 

Day two commences at 4 p.m. from the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
